mood: artistic music: Academy of St. Martin in the Fields - The Lark Ascending

Right now I'm staring at a blank canvas, listening to the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields play "The Lark Ascending", skipping out on Community Group, all while trying to think about what it means to keep relationships alive while on the road, whilst simultaneously trying to think about set design ideas for a series at Mosaic.

Yeah, that was a run-on, but I'm nowhere near as bad as Thoreau.

I head back out tomorrow after about ten days off the road. I always get kind of bored when I come off the road for an extended period of time - I go from having a busy schedule during the day to having not much to do. I usually end up doing lighting stuff on the computer and playing video games. My goal after this next run is to avoid the video games altogether and fill my time doing something productive. I have a billion books that I'm perpetually in the middle of reading, which makes me feel a little silly after a while. (It takes me months to get through a four-hundred page book.) Instead of doing the gaming thing, I'm going to focus on practicing my various instruments, finishing books and trying to get at least one set design concept done per week - at least some drawing per day. Oh, I can now play the opening to "Jackson Cannery" by the Ben Folds Five on the piano, no small accomplishment, though I have a long way to go.

Relationships on the road are weird, too. Nobody knows when I leave or when I'll get back, I simply disappear for a few weeks at a time and then slip back unnoticed. I feel like a relational drifter, sort of popping in every now and then to say "Hi!" before vanishing, though perhaps I'm misdiagnosing the problem. Maybe it's my fault for not being the one to reach and call more often. I don't know.

Tonight is one of the peak nights for the Perseid meteor shower, I'm headed over to the Reeds in a few hours to watch it with them for a little while. Go outside and watch for a little while, if you've never watched a meteor shower, they're fun. In case you miss it, Draconids is coming up in October, so this isn't your last opportunity for the year.
